My fingers are numb, the laptop is balanced precariously
on my knees and I'm on battery power, but here goes.
Chester dominated most of the game but were not as
convincing as they were against Tamworth and Leigh at the
last outing. After securing a 3-0 lead they almost threw
it away by being too relaxed and carefree at the back
allowing Leigh to score two easy uncontested goals.
However they sorted themselves out right at the end to
score a couple of late goals for a fantastic scoreline.
Shaun Carey had a shot at goal for Chester in the
second minute but it was off target and the goalkeeper
allowed it to go behind for a goal kick.
The game progressed quietly in the opening stages.
Alex Smith played a good ball into the box in the 10th
minute looking for Daryl Clare but it was just out of his
reach and the goalkeeper collected it easily.
A minute later Paul Carden played a good through ball
to Alex Smith who made a run with it down the right hand
side but his cross also found Ian Martin on the end of it
in the goal for Leigh.
Chester were having most of the possession but Leigh
did have a chance in the sixteenth minute when a Paul
Rickers free kick out on the right hand side found David
McNiven on the edge of the box, but his shot went
wide right of McCaldon's goal.
As McIntyre and Smith created a chance for Chester in
the 31st minute the referee blew for a hand ball by
Martyn Lancaster. Daryl Clare stepped up to take the
penalty but his shot to the bottom right hand corner of
the goal was weak and the goalkeeper saved it.
He made amends only two minutes later though with
Chester piling on the pressure. Alex Smith played the
ball into the box from the left and from close range
Daryl Clare launched it high into the back of the net.
Chester won a fee kick in the 41st minute when Alex
Smith was brought down near the edge of the box by a late
tackle. Darryn Stamp took the free kick but his
shot was weak and the goalkeeper was well placed to
receive it.
Again it was Chester striker making amends time two
minutes later. Kevin McIntyre played a good ball into the
box in the 43rd straight to Darryn's feet and he casually
knocked the ball into the back of the net. Chester were
dominating the game now after a slow start and the
scoreline reflected this at half time. 2-0 to the Blues.
If Leigh though the second half would bring some
respite from the Chester onslaught their hopes were
dashed almost from the kick off. Chester won a corner
which Kevin McIntyre played into the box. It was cleared
initially but only as far as Darryn Stamp who volleyed it
into the goal for his second and Chester's third.
Alex Smith could have made it 4 in the 55th minute.
The goalkeeper had come off his line to collect a shot
moments earlier but with the ball at his feet and the
goal beckoning Smith managed to hit the crossbar instead
of the back of the net.
Paul Rickers came close to clawing one back in the
59th minute for Leigh. He managed to place his shot from
some distance through the defence but was denied by the
left hand upright with McCaldon beaten.
At the other end Chester won another corner almost
immediately but as McIntyre played it to the far post it
curled out of play for a goal kick.
Phil Bolland came on as a substitute in the 64th
minute, replacing Scott Guyett.
Alex Smith had a free kick for Chester in the 66th
minute but as Clare and Stamp both rushed on to meet it
the ball went wide past the left hand post.
Michael Twiss came on in place of Kevin McIntyre in
the 71st minute. Two minutes later, Leigh got
themselves a consolation goal with Mario Daniel scoring
from close range on his debut appearance for Leigh. Still
3-1 to the Blues though, and the goal greeted by near
silence from the crowd of 2002 made up mostly of
travelling Chester fans.
Against the run of play, Leigh scored again in the
78th minute. The goal this time came from Warren
Peyton who had come on earlier as a substitute. From
about 12 yards he managed to thread the ball past the
Chester defence into the bottom left hand corner of the
net with McCaldon well beaten.
Not many teams get two past Chester these days, but
both Leigh's goals have been the result of laid back
lackadaisical defending.
Daryl Clare came close in the 84th minute with a
header from close range which was pushed behind for a
corner. The corner itself came to nothing.
Shaun Carey had a late chance for Chester in the 88th
minute with a powerful shot from 18 yards which was
blocked by the keeper. With the sands of time running out
and an outside chance of Leigh actually getting something
from the game, the result was put beyond doubt by Daryl
Clare with a goal from close range after a scramble.
We all though that was it. How wrong we were.
Into injury time and another brace of goals from the
Blues. The first was from Daryl Clare to get his
hat trick with an unspectacular goal, trundled over the
line from distance with the Leigh keeper out of position.
And just to rub salt in before the final whistle, Deva
TXT man of the match Alex Smith got himself deservedly on
the score sheet, blasting the ball high into the roof of
the net from six yards. Phew. That will do nicely,
Chester.
