Chester made sure of the points with a mostly comfortable
performance, although nerves were on edge due to the
narrow 1 goal lead that they held right up to second half
injury time.Chester had an early chance in the third minute
when Darryn Stamp just missed out on getting on the end
of a Jamie Heard cross.
The Blues won the first corner of the game in the 10th
minute after pressure from Daryl Clare. McIntyre took the
corner but was too close to the keeper who leaped above
the crowded goal area to save it with ease.
After a slow but patient start Chester won their
second corner in the 13th minute. Heard played it
short to Clare who played it back to him, allowing him to
cross the ball across the face of goal. At the far
side of goal on the edge of the box Scott Guyett rose
above the crowd to send a powerful header into the back
of the net to give Chester the lead.
The game continued at a fairly slow pace for much of
the half. McIntyre made a good interception to set
Stamp up with half a chance from what was almost a free
ball. Stamp's shot was well blocked though by the
Accrington defence.
Accrington nearly equalised in the 39th minute
following a substitution where Dean Calcutt replaced
Steve Hollis. Calcutt played a speculative but
accurate long range shot towards the top right hand
corner of Iain Turner's goal, bringing out an excellent
save from the Chester keeper.
Accrington continued with their first real attacking
spell of the game as it headed towards half time forcing
a brace of corners as Danny Collins made some good
interceptions. They could not capitalise though and the
blues went in at half time with a deserved goal lead.
Into the second half and the blues looked brighter in
the opening stages. On the 50th minute Sean Carey had a
crack at goal after a sloppy clearance but it was well
covered by Jon Kennedy in the Accrington goal.
Bolland did well to block some scrambled shots as
Accrington made a foray down the right hand side.
The ball was eventually cleared away from danger by Sean
Carey.
Daryl Clare had the chance to put the blues two goals
ahead in the 58th minute after receiving a good ball from
Jamie Heard who had made a run down the right. He tried
to turn and shoot in one move but could only blast the
ball high over the crossbar for a goal kick.
A similar chance came right on the hour mark with
echoes of the goal at Telford. Again it was Jamie Heard
making the run down the right and putting the cross in
for Clare to header. This time though he was off target
with the ball going wide left of goal.
On 70 minutes again a great chance to secure the game
came Chester's way, this time to Michael Twiss from about
10 yards out. His shot hit the right hand post and
crossed the face of goal before being cleared away.
Accrington won a corner quickly at the other end which
Calcutt played close to the keeper which Turner failed to
clear. It fell to Ged Brannan but he only managed
to blast the ball high over the crossbar.
Sean Carey had a shot at goal in the 88th minute as
the blues continued to park themselves in the Accrington
goal area. His shot was saved low by the
goalkeeper.
As nerves started to fray with news that Hereford had
come from behind at the Shay to take a 2-1 lead, Daryl
Clare settled the game once and for all after making a
good run down the left. With a clear goal in front
of him, he was brought down inside the box by Robbie
Williams who was dismissed for his efforts.
Daryl himself stepped up to take the penalty and
knocked it into the bottom left of the net sending the
keeper the wrong way.
Another three points then and a comfortable
performance overall. MOM to Jamie Heard who set up
several chances and was much improved on Tuesday.
