Dagenham were the first to threaten on a cloudy afternoon
in east London when they won a corner in the third
minute. The cross came inswinging across goal but was
headed over without danger. At the other end a long
range shot from Michael Twiss was deflected behind for a
corner in the 8th minute. Brady took the corner
which was cleared from the immediate goal area but fell
to Kevin McIntyre who shot wide past the right hand post.
The main action for the first 15 minutes though was on
the terraces as the Chester drummers did battle with the
Daggers trumpeter. Foster made a good run down the
right at one stage but was easily intercepted by Ashley
Vickers at the corner flag.
The uneventful midfield scrap continued with few shots
at goal until the 32nd minute when Twiss made run down
the left and played the ball inside to Foster. He
laid a shot on for Brady but Brady's shot was deflected
for a corner. The corner was cleared without
danger.
Chester had a bright spell pushing forwards for the
next 5 minutes. Darryn Stamp could have got the
opener for Chester after the keeper came way off his line
but the angle of the shot was acute and went behind for a
goal kick.
Daggers could have scored a few minutes later when
Danny Collins headed the ball down to the feet of Danny
Shipp who made a breakaway run with only Wayne Brown to
beat. Wayne held his guard well though and made an
excellent blocking save to keep the scoresheet blank.
Paul Bruce made a good run down the left for the home
side in the 42nd and won another corner which Chester
dealt with easily. So the first half finished as it
began, goalless, with neither side taking control of the
game and 0-0 a perfect reflection of the state of play so
far.
The stalemate continued into the second half with both
teams now shooting towards their own supporters. In
the 55th minute Chester were awarded a free kick after
Ashley Vickers brought down Ben Davies ten yards outside
the box.
It was Jon Brady who took the free kick as three
Chester players gathered around the ball for a set piece
but his shot was low and went straight into the defensive
wall.
Chester made a double substitution up front in the
65th minute in an effort to break the deadlock with
Rapley replacing Twiss and Clare replacing Foster.
However it was Dagenham who were next to threaten when
Alex Meechan sent a shot into the side netting in the
70th minute after making a good run down the left hand
side.
It was nearly disaster for Chester in the 77th minute
when Phil Bolland nearly put the ball into the back of
his own net whilst under pressure from Ashley Vickers.
Fortunately the ball went wide for a corner.
With only fifteen minutes left on the clock there was
a decisive push forwards for the first time in the game,
but in was in the wrong direction from a Chester point of
view. Daggers won another corner in the 80th but
could not win the ball in the air and it was easily
cleared.
They could also have scored in the 85th minute when
another corner came right into the goal mouth and Mark
Bentley's header went narrowly over the crossbar.
Another three corners for Dagenham came in the 88th
minute with the first two being headed behind by Chester
defenders. There was no real danger from any of
them though and the third went behind for a goal kick.
However if any team was going to score a late winner it
was going to be Dagenham.
Chester did have one final push forward as the final
whistle approached when Daryl Clare won a corner as his
cross was put behind, but the corner was cleared without
incident.
So 0-0 then at full time and a very similar game to
Telford with both teams cancelling each other out
effectively and no real potency up front. With the
exception of the last 15 minutes when Daggers were
pushing forwards looking for a late winner, this was a
dull game on a dull day in east London.
Deva TXT man of the match goes to Danny Collins with
solid clearances and good marking throughout the game.
