Another 2 goal lead thrown away! This time though
the Blues recovered with a late Daryl Clare winner which
he thundered home with conviction into the back of the
net. Not only that but the news from Hereford makes the
result even better as the Blues go 8 points clear.Chester got off to the best possible start with a goal on
45 seconds. Farnborough had the kick off but lost
possession early and Daryl Clare was released down the
right hand channel. He made acres of space for
himself, played a neat cross into the box for Darryn
Stamp to run on to and blast the ball into the back of
the net.
Farnborough very nearly equalised from the
restart. Azaina Doudou ran straight through the Chester
defence but fortunately Iain Turner was on hand to
smother his shot well.
Daryl Clare latched on to Ben Martin as he attempted
to play a back pass to his keeper and stole the ball from
him, but with only the keeper to beat his shot was weak
and collected by the grateful Mark Osborn.
Farnborough continued to be under pressure at the back
with Smith, Heard, Clare and Stamp continuing to
rain down on their goal.
Blues fans waited patiently for the next goal and it
eventually came in the 27th minute. This time it
was Darryn Stamp who set up Daryl to volley the ball from
an acute angle high into the roof of the net from about 6
yards on the right of goal. Chester kept piling on the
pressure. They won a corner on the half hour mark
after McIntyre had delivered a good ball to Stamp inside
the box. His shot was deflected by the goalkeeper
for the corner with a good reflex save. The corner
itself missed everyone as it bounced dangerously but
uneventfully through the goal area. Chester were
awarded a free kick in a dangerous position in the 35th
minute. He swerved it left footed around the
defensive wall but it was well saved by Mark Osborn.
With three minutes of the first half remaining Chester
nearly made it three. Ben Davies played the ball out to
Jamie Heard on the right wing who lobbed it high and
quickly into the box. Darryn Stamp got his head to the
ball where it ricocheted off the crossbar. Excellent play
by all in the build up. So a good first half then for
the blues with Farnborough's recent good form not being
allowed to see the light of day. Into the second half
then and Daryl Clare had a shot at goal in the 50th
minute but it was smothered by Osborn in the Farnborough
goal. Farnborough got a goal back in the 52nd after a
scramble in the goalmouth in which Turner fumbled the
ball. The ball had been played long and high out of
the Farnborough defence and was eventually tapped home
from 7 yards out by Nick Burton. The traffic continued
to be mostly one way though and Chester won two corners
in the next five minutes but could not do anything with
them. Farnborough won a corner in the 63rd minute which
Hodgson played to the near post. Uncontested Nick Burton
swung his right foot at the ball but fortunately for the
Blues the ball scraped past the right hand post.
Farnborough equalised on 68 minutes following a breakaway
run down the right by Doudou which left the Blues defence
struggling to regroup. Turner parried the ball away at
the first attempt but it fell eventually to Richard
Hodgson who tapped it home from close range into the
bottom left hand corner of the net. Twiss replaced Alex
Smith in the 70th minutes as Chester attempted to
regroup. Daryl Clare ran on to a loose ball in the 72nd
minute but it was just too far in front of him allowing
Darryn Stamp to get a shot on target but it was blocked
by the goalkeeper. The Blues had a free kick almost
immediately but McIntyre mis-kicked it completely.
The ball was last seen heading into orbit over the roof
of the south stand. Clare released Michael Twiss on the
left hand side in the 83rd minute. With no-one to assist
him he had to shoot straight at the goalkeeper and his
shot was just too high, sailing into the south terracing.
The game looked to be fizzling out to another
disappointing throwing away of a 2 goal lead but in the
88th minute Daryl Clare set the Deva alight. Danny
Collins played the ball forwards. It was flicked on by
Darryn Stamp into the path of Daryl Clare who thundered
the ball home from the edge of the box.
So a fantastic result in the end but Lord have mercy, we
can do without throwing away the two goal leads,
especially with the weather deteriorating rapidly in the
second half. Oh who cares, Hereford lost, we won and I'm
off to warm myself up in the social club. Good
evening from the Deva.
