A frustrating end to the game. What else can I say.
More of that later.Burton had the brightest start to the game and could have
been ahead as early as the first minute when Gary Twigg
placed a low shot at goal to test Ian McCaldon, who
parried the ball initially but collected it at the second
attempt.
Ian Foster at the other end in the third
minute tried an overhead kick at goal as the ball was
played into him by Darryn Stamp but the goalkeeper was
well placed to collect the shot.
In the fifteenth minute Carden and McIntyre made a
good move down the left and played the ball into Kevin
Rapley but he could only blast the ball over from 18
yards out.
The best chance of the game so far fell to Talbot of
Albion in the eighteenth minute after beating a Chester
defender but his shot was saved brilliantly by McCaldon
forcing a corner. This was a good attacking spell
by Albion forcing another corner within a minute but
Chester dealt with them without danger.
Chester had a brace of corners at the other end a few
minutes later. McIntyre played the first one short
and won another as the ball was put behind for a second
but Chester could not make any goal scoring chances from
either.
Jamie Heard had a decent effort at goal in the 34th
after making space for himself with a good jinking run
down the right. His shot was from over 20 yards out
though so the keeper had plenty of time to get on the end
of it.
Foster shot over from 10 yards out a minute later with
a first touch shot which would have been an excellent
goal had it gone in.
Two minutes before the break Chester made another good
move forwards involving McIntyre and Stamp but as the
ball fell to Foster once again he blasted it well over
the goal from a first touch effort 20 yards from goal.
Right on the half time mark Chester had a great
opportunity from a free kick in front of goal and
McIntyre's shot was superb. Six inches lower and the ball
would have been in the back of the net but instead it
bounced agonisingly off the crossbar.
So 0-0 at half time but with several chances at both
ends despite Chester's defensive orders (allegedly if
rumours from the touchline are to be believed). It looks
like there will be goals in this game in the second half.
Chester started well in the second half and Foster
could have had an excellent goal scoring chance after
breaking through from midfield but as he loomed down on
goal Steve Chettle put in an excellent challenge to deny
him a clear shot at goal.
Jamie Heard had an astounding effort at goal in the
fiftieth minute from a Darryn Stamp assist. His
shot came off the left hand upright from 20 yards out at
an acute angle from the right just as the Mill Hotel was
about to go ballistic.
Another excellent chance came Chester's way in the
56th when Jamie Heard played an excellent ball into the
goalmouth from wide on the right. Darryn Stamp was there
but his timing was just out and he couldn't get his head
to it.
Burton really should have been 1-0 up on 68 minutes
when a free kick was headed towards the goal-line by
Darren Stride but Henshaw completely fluffed his effort
and the ball went behind for a goal kick.
Chester made a double substitution up front on 70
minutes when Twiss replaced Foster and Clare came on for
Rapley. Two minutes later the change up front paid
dividends when Chester took the lead. Once again it
was Darryn Stamp who knocked the ball home with his feet
this time on the rebound from McIntyre's initial shot.
1-0.
Clare could have wrapped it up in the 90th after
jinking through the middle but he forced a great save
from the keeper. Chester looked to be playing out for a
win until 4 minutes into injury time when McIntyre was
judged to have brought down Kirkwood inside the penalty
area. It was a cool penalty from Aaron Webster
sending McCaldon the wrong way with virtually the last
kick of the game. Absolutely unbelievable but Chester
had plenty of chances to wrap this up but you have to be
disappointed with what was a very weak penalty decision
deep into injury time. Burton 1-1 Chester. Chester
MOM goes to Darryn Stamp. Goodnight from a very
disappointed Mill Hotel, Chester.
