This was a comfortable win for Chester in a game which
they dominated throughout in the middle of the field. A
quiet first half saw half chances aplenty to Chester with
little in reply from Halifax. However the game did open
with several potential chances for Chester from
free kicks in the early stages. In the third minute a
free kick from Brady was cleared by Steve Bushell inside
the box. Two minutes later and Chester had another
free kick near the goal line after a foul on Brady.
It was Brady himself who took the free kick high into the
box where Wayne Hatswell managed to get a header in but
he was off target.
In the 15th minute Jon Brady made a short run down the
right hand side and after what looked like a painful
interception when a Halifax defender lamped the ball into
his groin he still managed a good cross into Darryn
Stamp. Stamp headed towards goal but Clint Davies
in the Halifax goal was well placed to collect it.
In the 19th minute Chester won a corner on the right
which Brady played into the box. After an initial
clearance the ball was played left out to Wayne Hatswell
who scored a fantastic goal from an acute angle across
the front of the goal into the bottom right hand corner.
1-0 Chester a fairly just reward after good possession
for most of the game so far but without really
threatening in front of goal.
Foster made a good run down the right hand side
breaking the Halifax offside trap to get a cross into
Darryn Stamp but the goalkeeper was on hand to intercept
it.
Halifax had been very quiet until this point but on
the half hour mark Lee Elam created a half chance for
himself in front of Wayne Brown's goal but Phil Bolland
was there with a great interception to keep Wayne Brown
as a spectator.
Halifax had a brace of corners on the left on 33
minutes. At the first the ball was put behind
easily for a second corner. Wayne Midgley's second
corner saw Wayne Brown fouled as he came out to collect
it to end the immediate danger.
Lee Elam two minutes later created a great chance for
himself and Halifax but with a clear shot at goal from
the edge of the box could only manage to blast over.
A similar chance for Chester at the other end saw
Stamp blast over from even closer in front of goal.
Foster made a good run down the left in 39th minute
but his cross to Brady was too far forward and the
goalkeeper collected the ball easily. Immediately at the
other end Shaun Garnett headed the ball straight to Wayne
Brown after Halifax had broken away down the left.
Halifax had a chance on the 44th minute but Lewis
Killeen's low shot was well saved low by Wayne Brown to
give Chester a deserved lead at half time on possession
alone.
The second half opened quietly but then on 51 minutes
came to life with a second goal for Chester. Foster
made a run down the right and crossed the ball into
Darryn Stamp and once again it was a precision header
from Stamp which saw the ball hit the back of the net.
Another goal could have come a minute later when Ben
Davies had an overhead kick at goal after an initial shot
by Foster had been blocked by the keeper.
Then on the hour mark Chester won a corner which Brady
played right footed into the box. Wayne Hatswell's
goalbound header was cleared off the line by Darren
Hockenull. Chester by this point were in complete
control of the game and more goals looked a distinct
possibility.
It could have been 3-0 on 73 minutes when a Brady
corner was initially cleared by Adam Quinn but only as
far as Andy Harris whose shot diagonally across goal
clipped the right hand crossbar as it went behind for a
goal kick.
Another great chance for Chester a few minutes later
when great play in front of goal by Foster who fed the
ball through to Darryn Stamp. With his feet this
time though Darryn hit the left hand post from two yards
in front of goal.
The final 15 minutes or so were a quiet affair in
which Chester sat back slightly and let Halifax come at
them though with no real danger.
Man of the match Foster was replaced by Rapley towards
the end and Chester were happy to let the clock tick over
to a comfortable 2-0 victory.
