Chester's poor run of form continued today with
devastating consequences as they surrendered a lead
gained in first half injury time with an appalling
performance in the second half. We can only hope that
today is the low point in the recent poor run as we will
be relinquishing our lead very soon if there is no
improvement. The game started quietly with both teams content to
settle down in midfield for the task ahead.
The first chance came from a set piece in the 8th
minute midway inside Rovers half after a foul on Carl
Ruffer. Alex Smith took the free kick into the right hand
side of the box but Smith's flick on towards Daryl Clare
was easily intercepted by his markers.
Forest Green had a half chance in in the 18th minute
when Alex Meechan was released with the ball down the
right hand flank. His shot was easily blocked by
McCaldon though as there was no-one to assist his attack.
This was a good spell for Rovers though and they had a
corner a few minutes later but as the cross came in it
was headed well wide of the target.
The best chance of the game so far fell to Daryl Clare
in the 22nd minute when he received the ball on the left
hand edge of the box. With the goalkeeper advancing
he went for the lob but was off target and the ball went
wide to the right of goal.
Chester had a corner in the 27th minute which McIntyre
played to the centre of the box but the ball was
smothered by Perrin in the Rovers goal a few moments
later.
This really was uninspiring stuff at this stage
although there were signs that the game was starting to
pick up from it's early slumber. Clare again came
close on the half hour mark after Heard and Stamp had
worked the ball into him on the right but he had no time
to control the ball and could only manage to head it
over for a goal kick.
Rovers won another corner in the 34th minute but it
brought out an excellent save from McCaldon, diving
backwards to pluck the ball out of the air before there
was any danger.
The game continued in it's uneventful fashion and just
as the first half looked likely to end in stalemate, the
Blues scored the opener in first half injury time. Darryn Stamp played the final ball into the area from the
right hand edge of the penalty box and it was knocked
home by Daryl Clare from close range. And that was it for
the first half.
Into the second half then and Daryl Clare came close
in the 47th minute after Darryn Stamp's shot was parried
by the goalkeeper right to his feet. The goalkeeper was
still well placed though to block Daryl's shot but a
decent chance nonetheless.
Rovers still were having a lot of possession and
nearly equalised in the 57th minute. The ball was
played high into the box after a throw in on the right
hand side and Scott Rogers found himself in enough space
right in front of goal to get a header in.
Fortunately for the Blues he missed the target and the
ball sailed high over the bar for a goal kick.
A minute later Ruffer was dispossessed and Alex
Meechan this time found himself with a scoring chance but
launched the ball high over the crossbar from close
range.
FGR were surging forwards at this stage and Chester
have Danny Collins to thank for maintaining their lead
with a crucial clearance off the line.
Rovers kept on the pressure and won a brace of corners
which were crucially cleared away with McCaldon making a
good punch to get rid of the first.
It was some relief then that Chester made a rare
attack straight away at the other end and Smith found
himself in acres of space with only the keeper to beat.
The keeper held his line well though and deflected the
shot for a corner, which was cleared upfield without
incident.
In the 70th minute Rovers got the equaliser that had been
threatening for some time. Meechan was involved in
a move on the right hand side which resulted in the ball
being played across the goal to Steve Cowe on the left.
Totally unmarked and with McCaldon stranded, he had the
easiest of tasks to tap the ball home from about 6 yards
out. 1-1.
In almost a mirror image of their first goal Rovers took
the lead in the 75th minute. Meechan again was the
creator, playing the ball across goal from the left to
find Scott Rogers unmarked to finish the job from 10
yards. The Blues are all over the place!
Inevitably Chester made substitutions at this point with
Twiss replacing Smith and Rapley replacing Stamp.
Rovers unsurprisingly were getting everyone behind the
ball whenever Chester came forward making the task of
salvaging something from the game even more frustrating.
The Blues won a brace of corners with only a minute
remaining. The first was too close to the keeper
who tipped it over the bar for the second. Again
this was played too deep into the box and the whistle
blew for a foul on the keeper as he came out to collect
the ball in the crowded goal mouth.
Michael Twiss had a shot on target in the fourth minute
of injury time but it was smothered by the keeper just in
front of the goal line. No time left, so a poor result
for Chester but they got today what their performance
deserved. Nothing. Let's hope for an improvement at
Northwich.
