Chester did enough to win this game, but not much more.
Once again they never really got out of first gear with
the exception of the later stages of the game and indeed
Farnborough could have scored one or two from long range
shots on the break. However this was a disciplined
performance as usual, if not a spectacular one.Chester
won a corner in the first minute. McIntyre's corner
was easily cleared by Opinel as it was played into the
box. Straight away at the other end Hodgson could
have opened his account for Farnborough with a good
header from 8 yards out which fortunately for the blues
was just off target.
In the fifth minute Ben Davies made a good run through
midfield which resulted in Farnborough conceding a free
kick in the right channel. Brady played the ball high
across the goal to Carl Ruffer whose header went over.
On 10 it was Paul Carden who made a run down the left
and played a good ball into Darryn Stamp but his shot
went wide of the left hand post.
Two minutes later Farnborough had a corner which was
easily cleared by Phil Bolland. Chester had one
immediately at the other end. Brady's cross was
parried initially by Will Packham in the Farnborough goal
and cleared away from danger by Dewayne Clarke.
On 19 minutes Brady had a throw in on the right which
was played through to Ian Foster who had time to have a
shot at goal which went wide to the right. Andy
Harris had one of Chester's best chances so far a few
minutes later after receiving a through ball from Carden
but his low shot was saved by Packham.
At the other end on 25
Farnborough could have opened the scoring after a
breakaway run and long shot from 25 yards by Dewayne
Clarke which was fortunately just wide.
Brady had another corner for Chester just before the
half hour mark which was easily cleared.
A game of only half chances so far but that was soon
to end. McIntyre got his head to the ball in the
35th to send the ball towards Darryn Stamp who once again
made headers look easy as he headed the ball into the net
to give Chester a lead they just about deserved.
Farnborough tried to get one back before half time and
again caught Chester napping when Clarke played the ball
through to Chaaban who hit a great shot which went
just wide of Wayne's right hand post. However it was
Chester who went in at half time with the goal advantage.
The second half did not start well for Chester.
Farnborough had brought on Fashanu at half time and he
didn't waste time making his presence felt with a goal
from 6 yards in the 47th minute. Blues fans must
have been slightly concerned at this point at the team
once again were not playing to their full ability against
lower opposition.
However the half chances kept coming and on 55 Kevin
McIntyre played a really high ball into the box from
another Chester corner which was parried to safety by the
keeper. A free kick from Brady into the box two
minutes later met with the same treatment.
A
bizarre refereeing incident then occurred when a certain
spiky bottle blond Chester midfielder (whose name will
not be mentioned as he was booked later!) committed
a foul in the centre of the park. As he made his way,
full of innocence towards the corner flag it was Paul
Carden who got called over by the referee and found his
name in the book. Fortunately he was very professional
about it and put up no argument although I'm sure someone
owes him a beer or two.
Danny Collins was then called into action to deal with
a Farnborough corner. A few minute later Paul Carden made
a decisive run down the right channel and played a long
high diagonal ball over to Foster on the left. Foster
played it down to Darryn Stamp who made no mistake to
score his second of the day and sixth of the season for
Chester. 2-1.
He could have had a hat trick 10 minutes later with a
long range shot from the right which went just wide of
the right had upright. By this time Farnborough were
tiring, getting through all their subs and Chester were
beginning to kill the game off as a contest.
It was Chester then pushing forward in the latter
stages with a corner from Brady on 75. This was cleared
but almost immediately McIntyre gave Stamp another header
at goal but this time it was straight at the keeper.
So Chester were content to keep behind the ball and
play out the final stages. MOM has to be Darryn Stamp for
two superbly taken goals and making a general nuisance of
himself.
So for all you part timer supporters, you didn't miss
much of a contest or indeed much of a game. However
it is the 3 points that matter at these games as Chester
made the most of Hereford's defeat to Burton last night
when it times it looked like they were going to let the
chance go.
