This was a comfortable win for Chester at the end of the
day. Despite the scoreline it was not a vintage
performance, it didn't need to be. It was vintage
Daryl Clare though as he got his first hat trick of the
season by capitalising on Tamowrth defensive mistakes.
Tamworth had much of the early possession and won a
corner in the second minute after a good ball into the
box from Follett was bundled behind by McCaldon. He
made amends with a clear jump to catch the ball as it
came inswinging from the corner.
As the rain came on again Tamworth won their second
corner after a Jason Blunt free kick was cleared behind
by Collins. The ball was played across the goal
taking a deflection in it's way but it went behind for a
goal kick before Alex Baptiste could get to it at the far
post.
In the other direction Chester were struggling to get
the ball forwards from midfield, relying on high balls
into the area which just wasn't paying dividends.
Chester's first shot on target came from Daryl Clare in
the 14th minute, from a midfield position. With distance
to travel to the goal though it was no problem for
Richard Brush who dived to his left for an easy save.
Chester won a free kick near the corner flag in the
18th minute as McIntyre was fouled whilst trying to
deliver a cross. From the free kick McIntyre delivered
the ball low into the goal area and it fell to Carl
Ruffer who was rushing into the area to knock the ball
into the back of the net. So a 1-0 lead to Chester
against the run of play although to be fair Tamworth have
not really troubled the Chester defence so far despite
their greater possession.
In the 28th minute Paul Carden made a good solo
jinking run through the middle of the field and got
himself a shot at goal which was on target but without
enough power behind it to trouble Brush in the Tamworth
goal.
The game continued in a quiet vein and the next real
piece of action was Chester's second goal. It came in the
37th minute after Carl Regan provided an excellent lobbed
ball to the feet of Daryl Clare who then casually chipped
it into the back of the net.
Chester did have a free kick in first half injury time
but it was blasted behind for a goal kick. So a
comfortable lead then at half time with no major threat
being posed by Tamworth with Collins Ruffer and Guyett in
their way, but not vintage stuff from Chester either.
Into the second half then and with Chester shooting
towards their own fans, who just happened to be singing
the praises of Daryl Clare, Daryl delivered the goods. He
received a quick ball from Shaun Carey and patiently
waited for the opportunity to volley the ball past the
last few defenders and into the net near the right hand
upright. 3-0.
Tamworth won a corner in the 56th minute which was
cleared away by Paul Carden from the far post. Chester
though were mostly happy to contain Tamworth in the
middle of the park with Tamworth totally unable to break
through the solid Chester defence.
Tamworth had an excellent chance to get a goal back in
the 67th minute with a cracking shot fired in by Alex
Baptiste after receiving the ball from Brett Darby.
He forced an excellent diving save from McCaldon,
arguably his first real piece of action during the game.
Chester continued to turn the screw though and made it
4-0 a few minutes later. Alex Smith won a loose
ball and played an excellent shot to lob the ball over
the keeper and into the net.
Tamworth did get a consolation goal in the 73rd when
Norman Sylla ran onto the ball as it came into the box
from the right. His shot was from close range, about 6
yards out, and gave McCaldon no chance.
Tamworth fancied their chances now to get another and
Follet had another good chance for them in the 77th
minute but blasted well over. McCaldon had to make
an excellent blocking save a few minutes later as another
shot went in at close range.
Daryl Clare got a much deserved hat trick in the 82nd
minute. Alex Smith played the ball to the near post from
a corner where it was fumbled by the keeper. Daryl Clare
showed no mercy and blasted the ball into the net for his
third and Chester's fifth.
Chester made some late substitutions with Rapley on
for Clare and Harris on for Smith but that was it. A
great result for Chester against poor opposition.
Man of the match goes, not surprisingly, to Daryl Clare.
